Install RamDisk for Mac

Thank you for purchasing RamDisk for Mac.

About RamDisk

RamDisk is a powerful tool, that not only significantly speeds up your Mac, it also prolongs the life of your SSD (Solid State Disk).

RamDisk creates an image of your SSD in the RAM of your Mac, this images serves as the drive you are working. That’s why it is not only much faster than any SSD, but also enhances the lifetime of your SSD. Unlike the memory used in your SSD, writing cycles don’t have an impact on the RAM.

RamDisk serves 2 purposes: Speeding up your Mac and increasing the lifetime of your SSD. Of course RamDisk works with a conventional Hard Disk too.

You can treat RamDisk like any drive, you can store data, pictures, movies and everything on RamDisk like you would on any drive. The difference is that any data on RamDisk is loading much, much faster.

If you have applications that make extensive use of your hard drive or SSD like photo editing or movie editing, you should work on RamDisk. This will not only make your applications run faster, it will reduce the workload on your SSD or hard disk as well.

A few additional settings are necessary to put RamDisk to work.

Make RamDisk ready to use

Since RamDisk is an additional drive on your Mac, it needs a name. You can create as many drives as you want, as long as you got enough RAM.
Keep the size of the RAM in mind, when deciding how big the RAM drive should be!

To check how much RAM your Mac has, click on the apple icon in the top bar, then choose “About this Mac” in the drop down menu.

Experiences have shown show that a RamDisk should not be bigger that 50 percent of the available memory. If your RAM Disk is to big, your OS has not enough RAM what then will have an impact on performance. How much RAM your application needs depends pretty much on the application itself. Heavy picture editing with Photoshop will need more RAM than a browser does, as example.
You will later see that you can create more than one Ram Disk, that means you can create a Ram Disk for a specific application.

To set up RamDisk, tap on the icon in the bottom bar.

The following window will pop up. This is your control center.

That’s it. RamDisk is now ready to use.

Whenever you run applications that make extensive use of your SSD, copy the data into your RamDisk to speed them up significantly.
If you have an application that you are using often, you can create a Ram Disk that has the optimal balance between RAM and RamDisk for this application and name it accordingly.

Have fun, and enjoy working on your sped up Mac. has written 19 articles
